It's often difficult to come up with an article idea for a weekly, all original ezine. My mind is usually focused on running the business, generating revenue, managing the Website... all the crucial tasks that must be accomplished every day. It's almost an intrusion to commit the hour or two necessary to create weekly content. And yet, when I finally apply my fingers to the keys and begin to write, the fulfillment that comes from this aspect of my work reminds me why I do this.

Writing is my passion. I LOVE to write. I love words. I love using words and manipulating them. I love reading and thinking about words... and yes, speaking them, too! (I talk a *lot* more than I write!)

I've wanted to write since I learned to read in the first grade -- which was a lo-o-o-ong time ago. I HAVE to write. If I didn't write, I think the pressure of the words would well up inside me until they burst whatever dam it was hindering them and flooded the banks of my life like a rushing river that had ruptured its boundaries. I MUST write.

Being reasonably intelligent, however, I realize that while many people MUST write, it's not always for the same reason that I write. I write because writing is my calling... my life. Many others MUST write because even though -- to them -- it's a lousy job, somebody has to do it.

My friend Lloyd is a writer because he MUST write. He hates it. He realizes what hard work writing is, but he can't afford to pay me (or anyone else!) to do his writing for him. He doesn't like the situation, but until his online income increases, he's stuck with the status quo.

There is hope for Lloyd and others like him, however. There are ezines like this one, Websites for grammar and mechanics, style guides and professional editors.

There is also one simple 'trick' that I like to share with Lloyd and others like him. It's a trick -- while not a "writing" trick, per se -- that will make a tolerable task out of an intolerable chore. This is a trick that I've learned to use when doing anything I hate to do. And while it's not original by any means, it's a valuable lesson for all business writers to learn. You may have heard of this 'trick,' in fact, Nike made it famous... Just Do It.

Just do it. Just square up your shoulders, grit your teeth, and write. Put the words down on paper or onto the computer screen -- or even, as my sister still does -- at the typewriter. But write. Start somewhere... anywhere. Just write.

Don't try to write polished prose on the first try. Start with a rough draft. Revise, rewrite, polish and perfect your writing until it shines. Yes, it's hard work. No, it's not always fun... not even for those of us who love writing. But it's something that MUST be done for many of us. So write.

As you practice, it will get easier, and you'll do one of two things:

1. You'll learn to -- if not like it -- at least tolerate writing. It may become to you like washing dishes. You may not like, but you'll learn to accept it as a necessary evil and do it without complaint.

Or...

2. You'll decide that you HATE writing and somehow, some way, by some means, you WILL find the money to hire a professional.
