"The Dreams", by S.Z. Copyright © 2001, Age 13
Some say dreams can tell what’s to come, others say it’s what you want to happen. Dreams can be that but what if one girl knew the secrets to living that came to her in her dreams in the night?
Tracy was the new girl in school in a tiny town with not much of a future for her. Her parents wanted her to be farmers and for her to take over their farm. Her true wishes were to become a famous person somehow sometime. Tracy never thought she would be the one to make this town very popular.
Then one night she was all alone, drying her hair after a hot bath and a movie. Her puppy came running in after the cat, around and around her they ran. Spinning and spinning she went. Then it happened, right there right then. She feel into the still half full tub, hair dryer in hand she fell. The shock she felt was excruciating. An hour later she regained consciousness. She went straight to bed after changing.
That night her dream was unbelievable. She knew the secrets the US government was keeping from all the people of the states. Thoughts of poverty and war throughout the world. Waking up she wondered if this was true - there were talks of possible World War III. Her only friend had a brother who could tap into secret files of the army. They tried to get this information to come up and on the third try they succeeded. There in the files it talked even more than she had told about, but saw herself knowing these things. She, herself didn’t believe this. They called the white house knowing they should tell someone important. They talked to the president. He demanded they get out there and get more information about this incredible, possibly historical event.
Word spread fast and soon Tracy was not at the bottom of the popular list but the top. People were asking her to tell what they were getting for Christmas, and her making something up not wanting to say that she didn’t know that. But the truth is that her dreams were all about her knowing the secrets everyone wants to know. Such as, what Albert Einstein was really like inside, what he thought, and what he loved to eat.
Then one night her dream was one she couldn’t remember, but knowing it was the most important of all. It was about knowing the cure for all diseases, cancer, knowing the secrets of the universe, and the truth of who killed anyone who is unknown and why they did it. Tracy tried hard to find out, but the truth was that this magical power, if you will, was disappearing...and fast. Everyone wanted to know the how, why, when of everything that ever has or ever will happen(ed). She tried to help, but it wasn’t in her hands. It stopped after three months, and two weeks later it was as if nothing ever happened. She went back to having no friends, but now she doesn’t even have the one she first had. When she turned eighteen, she moved away, changed her identity and no one has heard of her since. So can dreams really tell you the future? You decide that.
