"A Moment Spawns a Life", by Joseph G. Copyright ©, Age 17
Life is a series of moments and every single moment goes a long way towards shaping our lives. However one moment can set the path your life will take.
It was the end of summer school and finally the whole family was on vacation for the month of August. My father was trying his hand at the restaurant business, which brought about his depression. He could not take the psychiatrist’s advice to step away from the restaurant project for a while and get the rest he deserved so much. He was so hardheaded and success oriented that he did not leave his work until the morning he didn’t wake up. I was only nine and I did not have a father anymore. A lot of questions needed answers.
After my sisters left for boarding school I was left to take care of my younger brother while our mother worked most of the time. Organization was the first thing I acquired from my duties. My time was spent on house chores, my younger brother, and school assignments. Every night I went to bed knowing my back ached for a good reason. These times humbled my young self to obeying and serving others as well as I could. From my mother’s orders to my brother’s requests I took them all dutifully. I worked for long hours to get things done at home and my mother always acknowledged my efforts. Although I did not expect anything from her, my mother did her best to reward my efforts. Since the disaster struck I had assumed silence, which gave me an opportunity to think through things. I found answers in something, not of this world, but heavenly and known as prayer. Prayer brought me peace and I did not hesitate in passing the secret to the rest of the family.
All things happen for a reason and the death of my father helped shape me into the person I am today, a dutiful and respectful son.
