"The Flowerbed", by Nikki M. Copyright © 2001, Age 13
Once upon a time, there was a little butterfly going about his daily activities of taking care of his flowerbed. He was working on the east side of the flowerbed and working his way to the west side when he stumbled upon a busy little bumblebee. The bumblebee also had a job of pollinating the flowerbed. At first the little butterfly didn’t think much of the bumblebee because he was a couple of rows over from him. The bumblebee seemed to be working very hard and not really paying attention to the little butterfly.
Then, as the bumblebee appeared to be moving faster than the butterfly, the butterfly was becoming jealous. He had never seen anyone pollinate the flowers but him and since the bumblebee was going faster he didn’t seem to like it. The bumblebee had over half of the flowerbed done while the butterfly, on the other hand, had not reached the middle of the flowerbed yet. How could someone do such a good job in such little time, wondered the butterfly.
Next, the butterfly decided to ask the bumblebee how he was getting done so fast and still doing a great job. The butterfly didn’t understand what he was doing different from the bumblebee. Obviously the bumblebee was cheating, concluded the butterfly. He decided to say something to the bumblebee to see what he would say.
“Excuse me mister bumblebee,” he said, “I have been watching you work and no one could pollinate the number of flowers you have in such a short time. You must be cheating, somehow.” said the butterfly. Well, the bumblebee wasn’t too happy when he heard this. “Cheating!” said the butterfly, “What do you mean cheating, everyone knows that bumblebees are the best flower pollinators there are!” Of course this made the butterfly angry. “Bumblebees!” he shouted, “Everyone knows that butterflies are the best pollinators that ever!”
As they kept arguing and not getting any work done, the queen butterfly and queen bumblebee showed up. They asked the little butterfly and bumblebee what was going on. Why was there such a commotion? After each took turns explaining, the two queen’s began to laugh. “Why are you laughing at us?” the butterfly and bumblebee said. “You silly little butterfly and bumblebee.” said queen butterfly. “You two are still young, why it takes both the butterfly and the bumblebee to keep this flowerbed looking as nice as it does.” replied queen bumblebee. “It doesn’t matter who works the fastest or hardest just as long as the job gets done right and that we work together.” they said. “There is not a way to cheat; we just do it differently.” said queen bumblebee. Then they said their apologies and ever since then, the bumblebees and butterflies have pollinated the flowerbed together.
