"My Father, The Greatest Guy You Would Ever Want To Meet!", by Kevin, Copyright © 2001, Age 22
My father's name was Bernard, the same name as his father Bernard (Benny) the name they gave to him so people would not get confused. My father was born on July 28, 1949 to Bernice and Bernard in Chicago, Illinois and spent most of his life in a neighborhood named Bridgeport. My grandma who we called Nana and Grandpa who I never had the chance to meet owned a Bar and Yard. They used to park their dump trucks in the yard supplied dirt, sand and stone in which they would deliver to local residence and businesses.
As a young teenager my dad worked extremely hard in the Bar his Parents owned. He eventually gained many skills from working there. He gained a great work ethic and eventually picked up a trade known as Pipefitting from watching repair men that were hired to do work in the Bar. When my dad finished high school he decided he wanted to pursue his plans of becoming a pipefitter, so he enrolled in trade school to fulfill those plans. Not knowing he would become one the most respected men in his trade and would be remembered by everyone he encountered throughout his life.
My dad did become a pipefitter, decided to get married to my Mother Karen in 1973. Three years later he had his first child whom they named Bernard Jr. Then on February 10, 1979, they gave birth to me. All through this time my dad was working extremely hard to provide for the family he had created.
As my brother and I grew older it was time for us to start school we both attended the same grammar school and eventually attended the same high school named St. Rita. When I was Senior in high school and my brother a junior in College tragedy struck our family - my father had passed away. He died on February 25,1997 while sitting and talking to his driver Joe. Joe drove a dump truck that was leased to the City of Chicago’s sewer and water departments. Through my father's death I grew physically, mentally and spiritually. I gained the strength and the power to keep the spirit of my father alive. Although he has left us, I can still feel his presence in whatever I do and whatever I may do for the rest of my life. My father, the greatest guy you would ever want to meet!
