"The River of Self", by Judith Orr Copyright © 1999
There is a river that has always been, it runs below many rocky black mountains. This river is not easy to get to, yet, the people come. They travel for many moons. Going forever higher; and through many dangerous forests, before they can reach this river. When someone finally reaches the river, they are overcome with the peace and serenity that flows from it. The water is deliciously cool, amethyst-colored, and so clear you can see the shiny white pebbles that cover the bottom. The river invites you to swim in its tranquil waters. When you submerge yourself in this glorious water, all worries cease, guidance and direction are silently communicated to you by the Great Spirit. As you step out, dripping from the river, you are filled with the gift of self knowledge.
One day, a beautiful young maiden named Yellow Swallow came to the river. She had devised a plot to marry the chief of a certain tribe. She hungered for the power and wealth that this marriage would bring to her. As she swam in the river, the Great Spirit told her not to marry this man, as it would fill her days with many tears, and unhappiness. The Great Spirit told her who she was to marry. Yellow Swallow was shocked, as she secretly loved this man, but he was a nobody. As she stepped out from the river, she laughed, "the Great Spirit is surely wrong, I will do what I please. I deserve a chief, not a nobody." Yellow Swallow went home feeling a strong tug in her spirit, but she ignored it. The wedding to the chief took place in the warm months, it was a great feast with many tribes attending.
Soon after the wedding, Yellow Swallow understood what the Great Spirit meant - her husband had a mean spirit, he beat her, and nothing she did pleased him. Yellow Swallow bore him many sons and daughters; still, he was not happy with her. The nobody, who she had secretly always loved, became chief of his village. He married very well and was content. When Yellow Swallow is filled with unbearable sadness, she sits her children around the campfire, and tells them the story of her journey to the river, and what happens when you are not true to yourself.
