"Ties", by Rowena Ross Copyright © 2001
Carol blushed furiously; they were always embarrassing her. This time it was not her mother but her little sister, and it was not the first time either. Carol stared ahead at her daughter and son playing on the swings, the first time Ann had made her blush was when they were that age, four and six, she remembered it very well, even still had nightmares.
“Wow Mummy look”. A man holding a brightly coloured clipboard came up to the little group and knelt down besides Carol “Would you like to go up on Stage, during the show” he asked her Carol immediately ran behind her mother needing protection, "Oh no" mummy said "she’s too shy, but my other daughter" Ann was pushed forward with a massive grin on her face, her name taken even before they found their seats. The Panto was fun; even Carol enjoyed herself she could ignore her family shouting out responses, as all the other families seemed to be doing so as well. She sat quietly her eyes wide and her mouth firmly shut. The clowns came onto the stag, she had completely forgotten about Ann going up on Stage until her name was called out and up she went. Ann had to throw a custard pie in a clowns face (and missed) and sing a line of a song into a microphone (she forgot the words) and finally got a bag of sweets as a reward. Ann came back to her seat beaming all over her face, and wouldn’t give Carol any of her sweets.
Yes Carol remembered it all very well. So there they all were watching the children play when Ann had turned around “I love you, you know” she told her big sister. Carol blushed furiously, totally embarrassed but deep deep down inside she smiled.
Ann watched her niece and nephew playing; they seemed to get on very well together and were a great credit to their perfect mother. Ann had always looked up to her sister, not only because she was older but also she was everything Ann was not. Ann had wanted to act ever since she went up on stage at a Panto. But she couldn’t sing, couldn’t do accents and was kind of gawky, Carol on the other hand sang beautifully, though not when she thought anyone else was listening, and she seemed to be able to do any accent on the spot. Carol was always popular and was very beautiful, nothing like Ann. Yet Carol couldn’t and wouldn’t act, she was shy, she got measles just at the thought of going on a stage. Suddenly it dawned on Ann how much she needed her sister’s approval. "I love you, you know" she whispered her mouth dry and her throat tight. Carol made no response just turned her head away to look back at the children.
Mary watched her two daughters. She looked from one to the other so different you would not think them part of the same family. She was very proud. Carol was radiant; being a mother certainly suited her. Ann on the other hand had never looked so beautiful, her acting career just taking off; she would soon be swamped with suitors. From the birth of each of her daughters Mary had decided their destiny. Carol was her little helper and when Ann was born, showed how good a mother she would be once grown. Mary had always encouraged her in all the womanly virtues. Ann was different. Mary saw that she could be an actor, Mary had wanted a career on the stage but did not believe she was good enough, so Ann was going to do it instead, though she would never have pushed her, she thought. She saw Ann whisper to Carol and Carol turn away, Mary felt an ache that she was not included she desperately wanted to guide them further, but they didn’t need her any more. Mary looked at the children playing on the swings there was the future and she knew exactly what each of her grandchildren would be once grown.
Julie looked towards the group of grown ups watching her. "Come and push me" she commanded. And three adults moved forward each eager to comply.
