"Courageous George", by Elliot R. Hutchens Copyright © 2001, Age 19
As I look back upon the loving memories of my beloved grandfather a smile comes across my face. Grandpa George had a special way of making me feel loved and fulfilled as I embarked on my life journey. He had this unconditional understanding of me that evaporated all the hurt, sorrow and helplessness that I was facing at the current point in my life. I'll never forget the time that he came up to Missoula to visit my dad and me. "This food taste like heck!" he proclaimed as he pushed the plate of undercooked hamburger away. "Got any of those Gondola bars?" he asked. Every time I think back to this heartfelt statement I can't help but laugh and smile at his simple understanding of life. He was always one to make a person feel good and happy about life, he had this magical laugh and hidden humor that really took the edge off life.
I got the opportunity to spend some personal time with him a couple of weeks ago as he lie so helplessly on the hospital bed. I sat next to the bedside and made a valiant effort to have a conversation with him. I pushed away all the millions of thoughts floating through my mind about school, work and life in general and really focused on him. "Do you remember showing me how to fix the old lawn mower?" I asked. "Yeah" he sighed. Even though it took all the effort he had left in him, he still answered my question. To me, this was exactly like the grandpa that I had grown to love, always willing to make you feel heard and understood. Just being in his presence and seeing his battle with life and the strength that he had in order to endure the difficult obstacle life had given him really inspired me. He was so strong willed and determined to not let things get in his way. He will be a role model for me for the rest of my life and I will never forget the way in which he made himself be heard and understood.
I look at this life altering event as an opportunity to celebrate a life well lived and learn and grow from his successes and triumphs. Courageous George will never be forgotten and he will always hold a special place in each and every one of our hearts. Let us celebrate his wonderful life and take this as an opportunity to enjoy each and every moment that we live on this earth. He will continue to look down upon us and give us the strength to live and grow in our own life journeys. Live long, love always and be strong.
