"Simple Beauty", by Elliot R. Hutchens

What is the essence of beauty? Is beauty limited to the cold hard lines of substance definiton that we so oftenly place on everything in our lives? Or is beauty the core driving force in life that has no limits and is bound by absolutly nothing. I think back to a heart felt and understanding movie called American Beauty. In the movie there is a young kid who holds essence of beauty to it's truest sense. A floating plastic bag that tumbles and whips in the wind seems so simple and ugly to most people, but not to this young man. He has this simple understanding of life that sees beauty is everything. This bag is one of the most beautiful things on the planet. What an amazing insight, to see beauty in such a simple act of innocence, a bag floating in the air. This act of simplicity is the fundamental core of beauty for me. Beauty is so simple and understanding that it seems almost non-existant. Everything in todays society must have a certain level of complexity in order to even get the slightest hint of acceptance. We are constantly battling ourselves with the assumption that beauty must be complex. Why is it that in order for something to be beautiful it must first adhere to certain characteristics that society has placed around a specific defintion? Why can't simple things be beautiful?

The answer to my question came when I came across the most beautiful person on this planet. I had gone throughout my entire life trying to find a simple yet true definition of what beauty meant to me and here it was, standing right in front of me. I was taken a back when I saw that a single facet of innocence could represent all that beauty meant to me; all summed up into one simple and amazing figure. This beauty was a young and courageous girl by the name of Stevie Ann Harrison. Her name alone gave me the most astounding chills of excitement and pleasure. The moment I laid eyes on her simple yet astounding beauty, my heart melted and my knees went weak. The most amazing thing about this young woman was that she was brilliant! How could a woman be so simple, beautiful and brilliant at the same time? I was perplexed by this simple beauty, so perplexed in fact that I was willing to do what ever it took to get to know this young and amazing woman better. My attraction for her began before she even muttered a word to me.

Stevie has this way of confronting her life that in its truest sense is so marvelous and simple that it makes me wonder why life seems so complex. She dances through life with such impeccable grace and ease it is almost degrading to my own views of life. I think back to the time when she gave me the pleasure of escorting her to a ballet called La Sophiede which was taking place at a local theater called Ballet West. The night started off with a wonderful dinner at a local Italian restaurant and ended with a candlelight dessert at my house. I'll never forget the casual glance in her direction during the ballet. She had this indispensable smile across her face that seemed to brighten up and enlighten the entire theater. The love that I felt for her at that moment could have destroyed all the famine and hatred in the world. Her smile had this impeccable way of destroying all the hurt and worry buried deep inside of me. The simple love that she held for dance is what true beauty means to me. A feeling that is irreplaceable and unmatchable by even the most intelligent person on this planet. Stevie wasn't the king of England and she wasn't Princess Diana, yet she held the power and beauty of the most successful person on this planet with one simple smile and gesture of gratitude.

Simple beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and it can conform to just about any object on this planet. Despite the simplicity of beauty, there is always something or someone who sets the pace and gives beauty a solid undersanding and definiton. I have always struggled with beauty's simplicity and why at times its complexity overwhelmed anything and everything in its path. Because of a wonderful spirit named Stevie Ann Harrison , I now understand that simple beauty can be challenged with something so amazing and overwhelming that nothing else on this entire planet could ever compare to. Beauty, as in everything in our lives, is based on our own preceptions and our own life experiences. For the rest of my life beauty's core preceptions and definitions will always start at one particular place in my heart. That place is the hidden essence of intelligence that holds the true and unforgettable memories of a young woman named Stevie Ann Harrison.
