"To Be a Doll", by Ana Mada

Every year at Ms. Lilly’s Kinder, they had a final show. Even though it was only a kindergarten school, the skits were very competitive. They did the same show year after year so all the students knew the skits. All the girls wanted to be in the doll act, and all the boys wanted to be in the cowboy act. Like so many other girls, I wanted to be a doll. They had the prettiest costumes, got to sing, and wear makeup. I was born to play that role.

The day came when announcements were going to be given on who got what skit. I was so anxious all day long I that I couldn’t even enjoy free time. They lined us up according to skits, and I was taken to the section that said Doll Act. I couldn’t believe my eyes; I was a doll. I knew they wouldn’t make the mistake of putting me in the stupid panda bear act. You had to wear a costume for that, and I was just too pretty to be hidden in a bear’s costume.

We only had a month to go, and rehearsed every day the first week. At home I noticed my older sister, a past doll, had weird spots all over her body. She was scratching all the time. My mom told me to stay clear from her, but because she was my sister, I couldn’t do that. Who would I play with at home? A few days later, I noticed I was getting those same spots and feeling very itchy. My mom soon told me I had also gotten chicken pox. This was not acceptable. I couldn’t go to school, which meant I couldn’t go to rehearsals for the doll act. My mom assured me that I would be all better by the time of the recital.

After infecting my little sister, (she had it the worst because she was only two and had a cast on her legs) and missing all rehearsals for the show, my mother regrettably told me they had given my spot to some other girl. They told me it was because I had missed rehearsals so much, but I knew the truth. It was because I was too ugly to be a doll. My body was full of scars from the chicken pox. They had switched me with a panda bear girl. Of course, that would be perfect for them. I would have to cover my scarred body and nobody would be the wiser.

The day of the recital had arrived. I hadn’t gone to rehearsals for the panda bear act, because my mother said I could still infect people. When I showed up, all the kids stayed clear of me. It seems their mother’s had told them to stay as far away from the panda girl. When it came time for the panda show they shoved me out there with my partner, who wouldn’t even hold my hand because he was afraid I would infect him. So you can imagine this panda bear kissing skit with one lone girl. At least I was the best lone dancing panda on the stage that night. I even got an award that night, but probably because everyone felt sorry for the girl sitting all alone because no one would sit with her that night. All I know is that I would have been an amazing doll. I can still see the girls jumping out of their gifts and singing and dancing as if nothing had happened. But that’s my life story. Instead of being with the dolls, they stick me with the bears.
