"Jack Learns to Talk", by Eulynn W. Williams

A young boy finds himself in trouble because of a small mistake. Here is the story in his own words.

"That stupid bird. Can you believe it? He does something really dumb, and I get the blame. It wasn't me who had the pot of beans on the stove. I didn't tell him to go dive into them. All I wanted was a talking parrot. Well, I've got one now! All he yells is "Help, Help, get Jack out! Poor, poor Jack."

"Boy does he look funny with no feathers! Talk about a skinned chicken!

It's funny how he never said anything until he flew into that pot of boiling beans. He really started talking then, and hasn't stopped. Mom thinks I got mad at him and threw him in 'cause he wouldn't talk, and I don't like beans. But I didn't! He just flew right in. Guess he thought it was a new kind of bird bath or something.

I gotta think of a way to convince mom that I didn't do it, although I did leave the kitchen door open. But who would have thought he'd do that?

The vet said he'd be alright. He probably won't have any more feathers, though.

It was hard getting him out of that pot. I guess he didn't like the looks of those tongs coming after him. Guess it's a good thing mom came in when she did, or we'd have had "Parrot-in-the-Beans" for supper.

Boy, what a mess! There were feathers and beans everywhere. I can understand why mom was upset. It was a king-sized mess! It wasn't my fault, I was just trying to get the dumb bird out. All he could do was flop around and yell "Help, Help, get Jack out, poor Jack, poor Jack!" All his flopping around made it harder to get him out with the tongs. You'd think he'd have enough sense to jump or fly out, but no...I guess he needed a reason to say something. Just talking 'cause I wanted him to wasn't good enough. Well he sure talks now!

Mom says she'd better make some kind of clothes for him so he won't be so sorry looking. I can just imagine what dad is going to say when he sees him tonight! He sure is funny to look at!

Now that I think about it, it must have been quite a sight when mom walked into the kitchen. Not to mention the noise. Me yelling at the dumb bird to hold still so I could get him out, and his screeching "Help, help, get Jack out!" No wonder after the shock, she was laughing her head off. I didn't think it was so funny.

Poor bird. It still wasn't my fault. It was an accident. How was I to know that he would do such a dumb thing if I left the door open! But now he talks! After all those years of silence and my trying to teach him, he finally talks. Wonder what it will take to get him to change the subject?

I'm glad he will be alright. Guess I have the only bird in the world that has to wear clothes. Boy, does he look funny! Maybe I could charge people to see the only bird in the world with clothes on..."
