"Them", by Divya Raj Copyright © 2000
They walk
With heads held high.
They do not hump,
Unburdened as they are!
Unfurrowed brows and placid faces.
Poised and confident,
Sure of all that’s life.
Bright smiles and warm vibes
they exchange so frequently
Fill me with shame, untold.
They have their goals set up,
Firmly etched in their minds.
They go ahead and far beyond
With alarming alacrity!
They know what, when
To expect, how to go about.
I admire their quiet wisdom
And their ‘cool’ airs intrigue me!
I envy the cozy blanket of niceties
Which tightly wraps all insecurities.
Petty squabbles and conflicts, inner
Weigh down my worn-out soul.
Some strength I need to derive
And not let myself be
Subjugated by life’s trials.
I need to build a strong self
Consciously, prudently.
I yearn to be like them.
I want to be one of ‘them’.
TAKE ME
Take me into the crevices,
deep down under the earth.
Disappearing and merging onto
one of its crystals; raw and pure.
Safely embedded and taken care.
Take me into the waters,
its waves, multiplying with vengeance.
Soothing and calming, and submerging,
still pacifying rigors, extinguishing
all anguish in a pretence.
Take me into the flames,
its warm embrace, enchanting.
Withering into dust and hollow,
the mutilated self won't breathe a word.
My mind will be at peace at last.
