"A Child's Heart", by Hope Dabney Copyright © 2000, Age 26
He never calls me on the phone,
At night I pray for him to come home.
I may be small, but I remember well,
It hasn't always been this way, I can tell.
My daddy used to come home every night,
Pray for me and kiss me as he turned out the light.
But things are different now you see,
My daddy doesn't come home anymore to pray for me.
I go to school and then to mawmaw's to play,
Then mommy comes in and says how was your day?
She feeds me, bathes me, then tells me goodnight,
She prays for me, kisses me, then hugs me real tight.
And I ask her again, when is daddy coming home?
She says to keep praying that it won't be too long.
It seems so far away, this dream I'm trying to find,
I finally fall asleep, but with my daddy on my mind.
In my dreams my daddy lives here with me,
Because in my dreams, life is however I want it to be.
Sometimes we all go fishing, and that just can't be beat,
On Sunday mornings we go to church and then go out to eat.
Sometimes we go to Wal-Mart just to have a look around,
Other times we ride the three wheeler until the sun goes down.
These are only memories, as real as they may seem,
This life that I remember so well, exists only in my dreams.
