"I Asked My Mommy If I Could Have a Dolphin", by Kelly Lovato Copyright © 2000
I asked my mommy if we could have a dolphin for a pet.
She said that dolphins belong in the water where it’s nice and wet.
I told her we could fill the bathtub with lots of water so it could swim.
She said we’d have to expand our bathtub just to accommodate him.
I asked my mommy if we could have a giraffe for a pet.
She said that our ceilings were too low for the lengths of their necks.
I told her we could keep it in the basement,
But she said no because that’s where all our old junk went.
I asked my mommy if we could have an elephant for a pet.
She said elephants were nice but to try not to forget
The truly enormous size of the beast
Snacktime alone would be quite a feast!
I asked my mommy if we could have a puppy for a pet.
She told me that was a good idea and so then out we set,
To the local animal shelter to see what we could find,
I was finally going to get a pet my mommy wouldn’t mind!
We saw a lot of different dogs, all wanting our affection, yet
A quiet little collie was the one that caught my attention.
After we had him bathed and picked up from the vet
My mommy told me we should name our furry newfound pet.
I thought about Fluffy, or Muffy, or Mitts
But none of those regular names seemed to fit
My little puppy that we had saved
From being alone and locked in a cage.
As he was licking my face
And I was laughing with glee
I thought of the perfect name for my little puppy.
"Lucky" I called him and the name seemed to fit
for I was lucky to find him and he to find me!
