"Mama", by Melinda Palmer
Copyright © 2000

Her wet hair
Clung to her aching back,
Now wearied from
Pushing the corded
Infant naturally
Through the endless maze
Of the birth canal.
Others were wooed
By the handsome stranger
Singing the traveling blues,
Sucking hungrily at her breasts,
Searching for a cotton mouth cure
Her sense of sensibility fled –
She was one terrified new mama.
